Drink Tank

Women Want To Know Launch

97 per cent of Australian women want to be asked about alcohol use during pregnancy and now a new national public health initiative, Women Want to Know promises to deliver this information.

Today on Drink Tank, we continue our coverage of the campaign that encourages health professionals to talk about alcohol use with their pregnant patients.

The campaign was officially launched in Sydney by Assistant Minister for Health Senator Fiona Nash on 1 July 2014.

The first national campaign targeted at health professionals since the Alcohol Guidelines were last updated in 2009, the ‘Women Want to Know’ project was developed by the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) in collaboration with leading health professional bodies across Australia and is supported by funding from the Australian Government Department of Health.

Highlights of the launch included a keynote address by Professor Elizabeth Elliott, University of Sydney and Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and a panel discussion on ‘Overcoming challenges when discussing alcohol and pregnancy’.

For full details on the speakers and panelists featured in Women Want to Know launch, see the program below. To find out more about the campaign and to order resources for health professionals, visit www.alcohol.gov.au.

Editorial

Drink Tank aims to generate meaningful commentary and debate about alcohol policy, and to provide a platform for all members of the Australian community to share their views and concerns.

Our goal is for the Drink Tank community to engage in robust discussion about alcohol, highlighting a broad spectrum of views and voices, and ultimately to raise the profile of alcohol as an issue of national importance.
