Double feature: Byron Bay booze battles

You might well associate Byron Bay with peace, love and harmony, but the NSW beachside tourist town has not escaped the alcohol-related violence and other harms that are sweeping the state and the rest of the nation.

Far from hippy and happy, the latest assault figures released this week have confirmed claims by local police that there is no place more dangerous than Byron Bay on a Friday or Saturday night. Today, in a Drink Tank special we take a closer look at the state of play in the Bay.

FARE Chief Executive, Michael Thorn tells the Byron community to be wary of the alcohol industry, saying residents should reject industry’s attempts to shift blame, and should take responsibility, and agree to actions to address the oversupply and availability of alcohol.

On the ground in Byron, Di Mahoney, the Director of Byron Youth Service discusses efforts by concerned locals to further pressure all levels of government about the alcohol-related issues in the town.

Editorial

Drink Tank aims to generate meaningful commentary and debate about alcohol policy, and to provide a platform for all members of the Australian community to share their views and concerns.

Our goal is for the Drink Tank community to engage in robust discussion about alcohol, highlighting a broad spectrum of views and voices, and ultimately to raise the profile of alcohol as an issue of national importance.
