No excuse needed

No Excuse Needed, a new campaign by VicHealth in partnership with the Victorian State Government, is empowering young Victorians to say no if they don’t want to keep drinking by using a positively framed, humorous approach.

This summer, No Excuse Needed is targeting young people who find they consume more alcohol than they wanted or planned to, because they found it difficult to say no.

The initiative aims to drive a change in Victoria’s alcohol culture by challenging perceived social norms around drinking, such as the view that all young people are drinking heavily on a regular basis.

VicHealth research shows the majority of young people (61%) are drinking without the intention to get drunk. Unfortunately even though many may not intend to, we know that some young Victorians are still drinking at harmful levels and that peer pressure can play an important role.

No Excuse Needed reminds young people that they shouldn’t feel like they have to make excuses to stay in control of the night.

No Excuse Needed

Whether your mates are shouting you another drink, or they’re shouting at you to keep up, it’s not always easy to say no once you’ve had enough.

It’s funny that we try to find excuses to not have another one. We find big excuses (like running a marathon), or little excuses (like antibiotics), so that we don’t end up drinking more than we wanted to, or planned to.

But you shouldn’t need to make up some silly excuse to say no to another drink.

Most young Victorians don’t drink to get drunk anyway, so next time you don’t feel like having another drink, just remember – you don’t need an excuse.

Our goal is for the Drink Tank community to engage in robust discussion about alcohol, highlighting a broad spectrum of views and voices, and ultimately to raise the profile of alcohol as an issue of national importance.
